White teeth can take years off your face and it’s a well known fact. Most of us had bright, gleaming teeth when we were young but with time and the abuse that we inflict on our teeth, it has become decayed, yellowed and stained. That’s why 10 million Americans spend 1.7 billion dollars annually for dental services and products. Teeth whitening are the most common dental cosmetic procedure. This can be done in the dentist’s office or he can supervise at home treatments. Over the counter teeth whitening kits are also available for purchase.

For in office treatments dentists will either use carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide gels in controlled amounts. Usually, they use 15 to 35% hydrogen peroxide gels. A dental examination is done prior to the actual teeth whitening procedure. If any dental problems are discovered, these are first addressed before moving on to teeth whitening. The dentist makes use of a pumice to gently clean the teeth and place barriers to protect the gums. High intensity light may be used to make the bleaching agent work faster after its application. The process takes an average of 40 minutes and usually results to an improvement of 4 to 6 shades.

Dentists may recommend at home systems to make the teeth whiter. For this purpose, they usually make mold trays for the patient to wear while sleeping or at least wear it for two hours everyday. The chemical bleaching agent used is often 10 to 20% carbamide peroxide gels which are applied thinly in the mold tray before the patient wears it. At home systems last for one to two weeks but can take up to 6 weeks if one deals with stubborn stains.

Over the counter teeth whitening kits are convenient and less costly but dentist supervised procedures provide advantages that are not easily ignored. Other teeth problems should be addressed and there are dental conditions which forbid the use of whitening agents, unless they are properly addressed first. Professional teeth whitening services may set you back by 300 to 1,000 dollars while over the counter kits only cost at the most, 35 dollars with some of them priced less than 10 dollars.

A dentist supervised teeth whitening procedure is expensive compared to using over the counter kits but it provides benefits that work towards over all improvement of the teeth’s condition. Over the counter kits are less so and can be used successfully. However, before using these kits, it would be wise to have a dental check up to ensure that using over the counter teeth whitening kits will not be detrimental to your dental health.
